Saturday 3 June 2017 – Levitha, Cyclades

Well, as you can see from the heading we have made it out of Leros!
The day didn’t start too optimistically with a message from the electrician saying that he had another morning job and couldn’t come at 8:30am as promised.  But he turned up at about 9:30, so that was not too bad.  The two of them chatted and chatted and I was convinced that they hadn’t a clue about what to do to fix the fault.  So again it was a very tense morning.  But all of a sudden it fell into place.  Tests on the start of the motor all worked.  In the end it turned out that they were confused about our two solar panel systems and hadn’t turned off the big one so they kept getting rogue readings over the cables.  The final verdict was that the real problem was with the switches all of which are a bit dodgy, but the motor battery one was completely gone.  They found lots of corroded joints and replaced them.  So by 12:30pm the job was finally done.  I wasn’t sure it was sensible for us to set out but Richard was dead keen.

He went to pay and we had a pleasant surprise.  They did not charge us for last night and despite the electricians spending the best part of a full day with us they only charged 290 euros.  So off we went happy.  In fact the smile hasn’t left Rifchards face for the last 6 hours.

The passage here was uneventful.  As expected we motored all the way.  For most of the time the wind was only at 4-5 knots.  For the last hour it got up to 11-12knots, but as ever it was on the nose despite the fact that we were going with what should have been the prevailing wind, but wasn’t.  But even that did not dampen Richard’s spirits.

Leviha is the tiny private island with one family living and farming on it.  There are 12 mooring buoys in a very safe hurricane hole type bay.  You walk up the hill to the taverna, which is really just the farm courtyard, and eat whatever fish they have caught today or goat from their herd.  We are hoping to connect to their WIFI when we go up for supper so that those of you who have been eagerly awaiting the outcome of our electrical problems with know the full story!

So as I sit here in the cockpit sipping my rum and coke I will sign off for today.  We hope to make it to Amorgos tomorrow.
