Thursday 22 June 2017 – Saranda (mainland Greece)

We decided that we must get to ancient Corinth before we leave.  So we get up early with a view to taking the 9am bus to the site.  The bus was a little late but we made it to the site by 9:30.  It was a bit of a disappointment.  It is a fairly big site, but there are no maps and the signage is hit and miss.  Also although this is the site of a famous Greek city, what we are seeing is really the Roman City built on the ruins of the Greek city in AD.  The museum was quite nice.  But the real problem was the heat.  Even at this time of the morning it is boiling and the sun is searing.

We spent about an hour there and then went to make our way back to the boat.  We were going to take the bus, but we ask about a taxi and as it only costs 10 euros we take the taxi.

We stop in town at the supermarket to buy a few things.  Back at the boat we make ready to go.  The big job is to clean the BBQ.  It took most of the night to burn down!  We manage with the water hose on the quay and then engine on to go.  We have a little crisis leaving.  I have prepared my bow line to cast off with only the end of the line holding, but as I pull it through the damn thing knots itself around the ring!  Richard has to jump off the boat to untie it.  The only alternative was to cut it!

So finally safely off we head for the mainland where R has identified a pleasant bay where we can anchor for the night and swim.  It is yet another day of motoring.  We weren’t in a particular hurry so we would have sailed but for the first two hours we have a 4 on the nose!  Then even when we turn 60 degrees the wind is still on the nose.  I cannot understand why.  Is there an evil wind god looking for us to mess us about?  Eventually the wind dies altogether.

The bay is very nice.  There is only one other motor boat at anchor.  It is very hot and very settled.  We have been diving into the water continuously just to cool off.  Even the water temperature has gone up and it was 26.5C!

Despite the heat I do cook on board.  I do a dish that I can leave to cook below while I go up to the cockpit to cool off.

I have had to come below now because the mosquitoes are after me.  I have been attacked so badly over the past few days that I look like I have some terrible rash.  Repellant does not seem to help.  Richard has not been bitten at all!

  1. Hi - Me and my Greek friend are following your progress but we don't understand where you are now. Google recons that you are in Albania already but surely that is too far in one day?
