Wednesday 14 June 2017 – Sounion
Well we got away at about 9am and set out for Sounion which
is south of Athens. It is famous
for its Greek temple which is set up on a hill. Again there was little or no wind and what there was, was on
the nose. So another long day
motoring.
We arrived here at about 2:30pm and anchored and had a late
lunch. This is a very beautiful
spot. The sea is almost turquoise
and the hills around made a wonderful setting with the temple columns sitting
over it all. The only problem is
that it is rather rolly. It isn’t really
protected from the swell and wash of the big shipping that goes past. Nonetheless it is worthwhile being
here.
We were a bit worried about the holding which the pilot says
is bad. But we seem to have found
a sandy patch to put the hook on.
It is rather deep however and we have put out 40 meters of chain! A record for us, I think.
We should go up to the temple, but it was far too hot this
afternoon.
We might go in the morning, but it is a longish row to shore and we are not certain how you get up to the site. We did row to the shore this evening and had dinner at a taverna. It was better than trying to cook in 30C, but over priced for one big grilled fish and some chips.

We are trying to get a berth in Vouliagmeni, a very posh
marina in an upmarket Athens suburb.
They have quoted us 78 euro a night and they still can’t say if they
have a berth available. We shall
see what happens in the morning.
